Reading and Maintaining a Private Motocross Track

How to walk a motocross track, read braking marks, soil and flags, and handle watering, ruts, berms and whoops between motos.

What should a rider look for when walking a motocross track before the first moto?

A rider walking a motocross track before the first moto should read the ground, not the layout. Look for braking marks into corners, the state of the soil at each jump face, flag and marker placement, and where water has pooled or drained. That walk sets the plan for gearing, lines and tire choice before the first gate drops. The walking lap is a survey. Start at the gate and move in the direction of travel so the track reads the way it will be ridden. At each braking zone, check the length and depth of the marks. Long, dark marks mean the dirt is holding and riders are carrying speed in. Short, patchy marks mean the surface is loose or already glazed, and the entry will need to be earlier and softer. At jump faces, look at the lip. A clean, square edge with even color takes a straight approach. A rounded or chipped edge, or one side darker than the other, means the face has been worn by traffic and the take-off will push the bike one way. Check the landing separately. A landing that is drier than the face will feel hard and kick; one that is wetter will absorb the rear wheel and slow the exit. Flags and markers are the track’s own notes. Yellow flags at a blind crest or a jump landing tell you where the promoter expects trouble. Missing or leaning markers at a corner entry usually mean the line has moved since they were set. Walk the outside of a corner as well as the inside, because the outside often holds the better drive even if it looks longer. Soil tells the rest. Dark, damp dirt holds a rut. Pale, dry dirt on top of a hard base will break loose under load. If the track has been watered recently, the surface may look uniform but the base underneath can still be dry, and the first few laps will cut through the soft layer quickly. How do take-off jumps, ruts, berms and whoops change with watering and traffic?

Every shape on a motocross track is made by two forces: traffic and water. Traffic removes material from the line and pushes it to the edges. Water softens the surface so that removal happens faster and deeper. The two together decide what a jump face, a rut, a berm or a set of whoops will do by the end of a moto. Take-off jumps change at the lip first. As bikes drive up the face, the rear tire digs a groove and throws dirt back down the ramp. The lip loses its square edge and becomes rounded. A rounded lip sends the front wheel up earlier and shortens the arc. If the face is watered before a moto, the groove cuts deeper in the first laps and the lip can square up again under a fresh layer, then round off again as the moto runs. Riders who walked the track in the morning may find a different take-off by the second moto. Ruts form where the soil is soft enough to hold a groove and where riders keep using the same line. Watering makes ruts deeper and more defined, but it also makes them fragile. A rut that is deep and wet will hold the front wheel, which is useful in a corner, but the same rut can collapse at the exit if the base is soft. Traffic widens ruts at the entry and narrows them at the exit, because riders enter on different lines and leave on the same one. Berms are built by traffic as much as by a machine. A berm is a banked corner that lets a rider carry speed without braking. Traffic pushes dirt up the face of the berm and packs it. Watering softens the face so it packs harder when ridden, but too much water makes the face slide. A berm that was square in the morning can be rounded and lower by the afternoon, and the line moves higher or lower on the face depending on where the dirt is driest. Whoops change with suspension and speed. A set of whoops is a series of small jumps that a rider can skim or jump. Traffic packs the tops and digs the troughs. Watering softens the tops, so the first riders sink in and the whoops feel deeper and slower. As the moto runs, the tops dry and pack, and the whoops become faster and more skimmable. The frequency of the whoops, meaning the distance from one crest to the next, stays fixed by the builder, but the effective frequency changes with how much the rear suspension compresses in each trough.

What does track maintenance involve between motos and after a riding day?

Between motos, the work is short and specific. Water the jump faces and landings first, because they dry fastest and they are where a dry, hard surface causes the most trouble. Water the corner entries and berm faces next, then the straights. Do not flood a berm face; a light pass that soaks in is better than a heavy pass that runs off. Check the flags and markers after watering, because a hose or a tractor can knock them over. A stand routine helps. Keep a small kit at the truck: a shovel, a rake, a watering can or hose, spare flags, a tire gauge and a basic tool set. After each moto, walk the first two corners and the biggest jump. Fill any hole that has opened at a landing with loose dirt and pack it by foot. Rake the loose dirt off a berm face back onto the face, not off the track. If a rut has collapsed at an exit, rebuild it in thin layers rather than one thick pile, so the base packs. After a riding day, the work is larger. Water the whole track if the surface is dry, then let it sit. Drain any low spot where water stands, because standing water softens the base and creates a hole that will only get deeper. Damage the track with a tractor or a hand drag to level the whoops and the braking bumps, but do not drag a berm flat. Berms are built in layers: put down a thin layer of dirt, water it, pack it, then add the next layer. A berm built in one thick pile will slide out on the first hard lap. Camping and training days add their own tasks. If riders camp on site, keep the camping area off the track and away from drainage lines. On a training day, run the track in one direction and water between sessions, then reverse or rest a section if it is cutting up badly. A private track that is watered, drained and damaged on a regular schedule holds its shape longer and needs less repair at the start of the next ride.

A short checklist for the next ride day

Walk the track in the direction of travel before the first moto. Note braking marks, jump lips, landings, flag positions and wet spots. Water the faces and berms lightly, not heavily. Check the markers after watering. Between motos, fill landing holes, rake berm faces and rebuild collapsed ruts in thin layers. After the day, water, drain, drag the bumps and leave the berms alone. The shapes on a motocross track are never fixed; they are the record of the last rider and the last watering pass, and reading them is part of riding them.
