The step library starts with listening.

A plain-language index for words that appear in Cincinnati and Midwest social-dance conversations.

Use these as questions to bring to a lesson, not as a test to pass.
A pair of dancers practise a compact sequence while a notebook records step names and rhythms beside the floor.
01

Bop

A local social-dance word used in the archive alongside jitterbug, shag and swing. Use the room’s own vocabulary and ask when it varies.

02

Pulse

The steady rhythmic feeling a dancer can return to when a pattern gets busy. It is heard and felt, not performed as a pose.

03

Slot

A shared lane or line of travel that helps partners avoid colliding with nearby dancers.

04

Connection

The physical and visual information partners use to offer and receive an idea without forcing it.

05

Shag

A family of swing-era dances with its own pulse and footwork traditions. Learn the local version from a teacher rather than flattening every shag into one basic.

The archived Cincinnati Bop Club made a similar promise in its lesson page: start with the feet, learn basic etiquette and have fun. A current class is the right place to learn the exact shape of a step. The library stays deliberately modest because local vocabulary is learned with bodies, music and teachers. It is a bridge into practice, not a substitute for it. Ask what a word means in the room you are entering and notice how the answer changes with the dance.
